Want to fly a drone without having to worry about losing signal, crashing into the neighbors house or rage about lousy controls?

Drones have exploded in popularity to such a degree that it has now become highly attractive as a lucrative career, elite sport and casual hobby, so we decided to buy 2024’s best selling drones to see how well they perform in our tests.

Our testing revealed that paying for expensive big brands can often be a waste of money. To our surprise, our test winner was actually from a smaller company that managed to beat the big brands in both fly time, ease of use, maintenance, transmission range and price.

Here’s our Top 5 Picks this year, with a full review of our top pick at the bottom of the page:

We Bought & Tested The Most Popular Drones, Here’s Why QuadAir Drone is #1

SUMMARY: In short it’s a fully portable, lightweight drone that can match high tear professional racing drones in both speed, agility and transmission range. All you need to do is connect it with your smartphone and fly away. It’s built-in orientation system makes sure any beginner will have full control on their first try, while experienced pilots will enjoy its high speed and agility.

They are currently offering 50% off first orders on their website here

UPDATE - QuadAir Drone is currently sold out in retail stores nationwide. However, they may still be available on their website HERE.

I’ve been flying drones for 5 years and had the privilege to fly an Alta 8 drone (used in Hollywood to mount cameras and equipment up to 15 pounds) so I have definitely experienced everything from the cheapest junk to state of the art film industry tech.

Getting assigned with this review came as a blessing since my friends have been asking me for recommendations on a good drone. But when I tell them that there aren’t any good drones under NZ$1,560, or at least NZ$1,250, they think I’m crazy.

I thought I could prove my point with this review, but I must happily admit, I was wrong!

The QuadAir Drone is a high performing drone with a lot of camera features that will satisfy both professional and new pilots.

First Impression

When I got the QuadAir Drone delivered to my door 2 days after ordering it, I was immediately impressed with the delivery process. I was taken by surprise and hadn’t even seen the actual drone yet. But little did I know that it would only get better!

When I opened the package and saw the high quality material shine back at my face I actually had to confirm it was the right drone. My assignment was to review drones under NZ$310, and this looked more like one of the NZ$1,250-NZ$1,560 drones I’ve bought for myself through the years.

We all know the difference between cheap brittle plastic and high grade quality materials, and the same goes for high performing drone designs. This looked very much like a professional racing drone.

Design

The reason why I’ve been warning my friends about “cheap drones” is because they aren't built for precision flight and especially not to last, but most of all, they lose signal after as little as 150 feat.

When I inspected the QuadAir Drone I was relieved to see that it's rotors are strong and the arms are sturdy. Its small and compact design means I’m able to bring it with me without making a big project out of it. It is actually so compact and sturdy when folded that I can put it in my pocket and move around without worrying about breaking it.

But the game changer was on the box it came in, it was written on the side with humble letters: 4 km transmission distance. Wait, what? That's 2.5 miles! If this is true, then this drone is on par with my most expensive drones.

Transmission distance, Camera quality, and the drones response to controles are the three things that matter, and the HD camera would be more than enough from what I could see on the specs.

Controls

The joysticks give a slight pleasant resistance that increases precision, and the classic game controller design works great with its foldable antennas and retractable phone holder.

Everything about the QuadAir Drone seems to be following the same theme of being foldable and compact to motivate it to come along wherever you go.

A feature I really appreciate since I often find myself thinking “If only I had my drone now”.

And just to prove my point of how convenient the QuadAir Drone makes it to bring it along, you don’t even need to bring the control pad with you as you can download an app to steer the QuadAir Drone from your phone!

And if that's not enough, there’s an easy-controle feature that lets you steer the drone by tilting your phone in any direction you want the drone to go, making it super intuitive and beginner friendly to fly while maintaining orientation of the drone.

And the list goes on with pre-programmed 360 camera moves, slow motion recording, automatic takeoff and landing with the press of a single button. It's simply amazing.

Testing

The drone came half charged so I went straight to the nearest park, connected my phone and pressed the automatic takeoff button.

Voila, it shot straight up and stopped, hovering completely still. An extremely important feature. Many beginners get stressed when they take off and tend to lose control of the drone within seconds. But this feature allows you to safely get up in the air and take a breath before doing anything else.

I started taking some sharp turns to test its limits and response time, only to realize the QuadAir Drone is just as good as any of my high tier drones. The only difference being a small difference in advanced rolling maneuvers that isn't necessary until you start flying with a headset display.

Even the transmission distance was just as good as promised, flawless up to 2,5 miles. And I must admit, I lost track of it before it even got that far, so it's definitely more than you need.

Oh, you might think losing track of the drone would be a problem? well there’s a feature for that as well. with a press of a button it flies right back to its starting position so you never have to worry about flying out of sight.

After 15 minutes I remembered I started flying with a half-charged battery and immediately panicked. Since I had no visual of the drone it could just as well be dead.

But then I checked the display on my phone and saw that it conveniently shows how much battery is left, and it still had 20% battery!

What makes the QuadAir Drone different from other products?

You can't compare the QuadAir Drone with anything in its price class, this is why.

Verdict

I never thought I’d say it but I highly recommend this drone that doesn’t even cost NZ$155. I even recommend this to highly experienced drone pilots as it has all the features you’d expect from an advanced drone.

So whether you’re a beginner or a pro and is on the lookout for a drone that has a great transmission range, a long battery time, HD camera footage, capable of high speed and agility as well as having all the safety and recovery features needed to fly in any situation, the QuadAir Drone is what you’re looking for.

A recent problem has occured

The QuadAir Drone has ironically gotten so popular in the drone community that it has recently become quite hard to get a hold of one.

And if the manufacturer had a hard time keeping up with demand before, they will surely have a hard time now since the founders just launched a 50% discount.

So as you can imagine, it’s a little irritating that I can’t get enough of these drones for my friends and family whom I want to start flying with me.

And what's even worse is that some of my friends have accidentally bought fake copycat versions from companies that try to get in on the success of the QuadAir Drone.

So make sure to order from their official website in order to get the real deal!
